A Successful Track Talk at SportPesa Ladies Day calls for a Repeat

An enthusiastic group of racegoers joined local racing journalist Jan Green at the latest Chester fixture; SportPesa Ladies Day, to enjoy a new initiative from Chester Racecourse.

Track Talk invited racing enthusiasts attending the fixture the opportunity to enter into a competition to win places to an 'inner-sanctum' talk.

The competition was well subscribed and a lucky group of 20 randomly selected individuals joined Jan at the Boodles Phone Box in the Paddock ahead of the first.

The group were chaperoned into the Parade Ring, where Jan imparted knowledge, wisdom and some amusing anecdotes. As the runners entered the ring for the first race, members of the group were able to get up-close and view the horses in great detail, whilst asking Jan questions about all manner of things including horse wellbeing and race preparation.

Commenting on the new initiative, Jan Green said:

"Press room banter frequently centres around why people go racing and how racegoers can get more out of the day. Chester Racecourse decided to do something about it! Based on my experiences of going racing with friends and family when I am not working, it is clear from the questions asked that knowing more about the horse is helpful - and can be a catalyst to learn even more."

"The lucky winners on Spsortpesa Ladies Day were able to see the different builds of the entries, when they were pointed out. There were two fillies in the race, lighter frames than the colts. It was easy to point out the detail in the racecard so everyone could identify this aspect in the remaining races.

"The Track Talk attendees were surprised by how tiny the saddles are and an interesting question was asked about plastic saddles being uncomfortable when horse start to sweat. Attendees then learnt that a chamois leather that is placed underneath the number cloth provides an absorbent surface - mystery solved!

The session ended with an old horseman's rhyme: One white foot buy a horse, two  white feet try a horse, three white feet look well about him, four white feet do without him! And it's meaning?

"There is a rationale ...... that's for next time" concluded Jan.

The group were then invited to view the first race on the big screen in the Parade Ring next to trainer Tom Dascombe and the team from Manor House Stables.

In all, the group were thrilled with the experience, with many stating they'd do it again in a heartbeat.

With that in mind, Track Talk will be running again at the SportPesa Autumn Festival on Saturday 14 September and Corbettsports Season Finale on Saturday 28 September.
