Chester Racegoers Raise £38,651 for Local Charities in 2018

The 2018 Chester Racecourse season drew to a close on Saturday 29 September with the Golden Square Shopping Centre Season Finale. 260,370 racegoers passed through the racecourse gates at 15 fixtures over the duration of the season to enjoy a day’s racing on the Roodee and generously donated to a different charity each raceday on exiting the course.

A collective £38,651 was raised through 15 separate bucket collections across the year, with racegoers learning about each charity via information in the racecard and social media during raceday. The amount raised impressively topped 2017’s charitable donations fund by 37%.
Chester Racecourse also donated hundreds of raceday tickets in 2018 free of charge to various charities, to help fundraise at events and charitable prize draws across the region. From local school parent teacher associations and children’s sports clubs, to mental health charities, Ticket for Troops and wider national charities.

Chester Race Company Charity Coordinator Jeannie Chantler said: “Bucket collections on raceday are a great way to raise awareness for many worthwhile charitable causes over the course of a season and help raise much needed funds to assist in a variety of areas of need. We’re pleased we can support so many local charity initiatives with such effective mechanics as this and the donation of tickets and we are indebted to the generous support of our racegoers.”

Chester Racecourse has built strong relationships with many organisation coordinators and volunteers over the years, and The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity alone has collected £10,500 over the last two years at bucket collections on race days.
Elspeth Wilson, Fundraising Manager at The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “As a charity, we’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to collect at Chester Racecourse this year and last year.  We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of race-goers and can’t thank them enough for throwing their loose change in the charity buckets!  The money donated will make a huge difference to people with cancer in Cheshire, Merseyside and the surrounding region, thank you.”

On behalf of all the charities, Chester Racecourse would like to issue a big thank you to racegoers and the wider local community for their continued support.
