The Open Course is separated into three areas, highlighted on the map below. Racegoers arriving on foot can enter via Gate 9 from Nuns Road. Racegoers arriving by car can enter from the main racecourse entrance. Gate 10 is opened as an overflow on busier days and the Little Roodee car park access gate (Gate 12) is opened on Family Funday only.
Car parking can be booked in advance or on the day by cash or card (£11 on the day only for Family Funday – car parking is not available to purchase in advance for this race date).
The Open Course is located within the centre of the race track, the ideal setting for a relaxed day at the races. We host free children’s activities and live entertainment (weather permitting) on Saturday and Sunday fixtures to entertain younger racegoers and entrance to those aged 17 and under is completely free*.
Racegoers are permitted to bring their own food and soft drinks into this area, although you will find a number of refreshment vendors on site. Chester Bet and racecard vendors are also located out on the Open Course, however there isn’t an ATM, so we advise you to bring cash with you. Racegoers arriving by car may park in the Car Park or the Open Course Car Park Picnic Area if they wish to enjoy a picnic before entering the Open Course or reside by their car for the duration of the day.
Blankets and foldaway chairs are permitted on the Open Course, but not in any other enclosure.
Picnic tables have been added to the Open Course for the 2021 season and are available to purchase online at an additional cost of £20 per table (maximum of six people per picnic bench).
Food and drink is permitted on the Open Course, providing brought in sealed plastic containers. BBQs are allowed in designated areas of the Car Park Picnic Area, but not the Open Course itself.
A moderate amount of alcohol may be brought onto the Open Course and Open Course Car Park Picnic Area by individuals over the age of 18. Racegoers are permitted to bring with them one bottle of sealed wine, sparkling wine or four sealed cans of lager, cider or pre-mixed alcohol; such as gin and tonic. Sprits are not permitted. Please note that searches will be conducted upon entry and anyone found to be attempting to bring on more than the allocated amount will not be allowed entry to the course.
An ‘Alcohol Free Zone’ area will be in place for families and proactively managed by our stewarding team throughout the day. Please note there are a number of food and beverage outlets on the Open Course from which to purchase refreshments throughout the day. The racecourse operates a responsible drinking policy. Drunkenness, rowdy behaviour or intimidating other customers will not be tolerated.
