Chester Racecourse has introduced reusable cups across the racecourse as part of ongoing efforts to reduce waste and improve sustainability on race days.

The new initiative sees drinks served in reusable cups provided by One Cup, the UK’s only carbon-neutral reusable cup system. When purchasing their first drink, guests will pay a £1 cup hire charge, which covers washing and reuse. When buying subsequent drinks, the cup can be returned and swapped for a clean one at any bar on the course. The change forms part of the Roodee 500 sustainability strategy which aims to achieve climate positivity by 2039, the 500th anniversary of the racecourse. It is designed to significantly reduce the volume of single-use plastic generated during busy race meetings, helping Chester Racecourse operate more responsibly while maintaining a high-quality guest experience.

How the reusable cup system works

The reusable cup system has been designed to be simple and convenient for racegoers. Once a drink is purchased, the cup can be used throughout the day and easily exchanged at the bar when ordering another drink.

Cups are professionally cleaned and reused and all carbon emissions generated during the manufacture and transport of the cups are fully offset through UK tree planting.

A positive step for race days

With high attendance, even small operational changes can make a meaningful difference. By reducing reliance on single-use plastic cups, the racecourse can dramatically cut down on waste produced during events.

Guests are encouraged to support the initiative by returning their cups to the bar or bins provided around site, rather than taking them home, allowing cups to be washed and reused again.

Looking ahead

The introduction of reusable cups reflects Chester Racecourse’s ongoing commitment to more sustainable event operations and becoming climate positive by 2039. The initiative has been designed to integrate seamlessly into the race day experience, ensuring fast and efficient service at bars while reducing environmental impact.
