Despite drizzly weather threatening to spoil the script, there were no dampened spirits on the Roodee for the 2025 Ladies Day, featuring Björn Again. Racing was ‘The Name Of The Game’ for this fixture, with the feature coming at 2:40pm in the Virgin Bet Chester Stakes (Listed), and ground conditions Good/Good To Firm.

Race report by Adam Perkins.

THE POWELLS JEWELLERY EBF FILLIES' CONDITIONS STAKES

Much the best throughout the race, Coming Attraction (7/4F) proved a class apart in the opening contest, coming home a tidy 1 ¾ length victor in the hands of Jack Mitchell for trainer Roger Varian. Travelling strongly from the get-go, Coming Attraction forced her way into an early lead upon leaving the stalls, setting a good clip out in front as Blingy’s Sister (11/4) gave chase. Moving with zest around the home turn, it didn’t take long for Coming Attraction to extend her lead even further, showing a smart turn of foot passing the two-furlong marker before careering away up the run in to record a more impressive victory than the winning margin suggested. A team worth noting, Varian and Mitchell also combined for Listed success in February, striking with Tyrrhenian Sea at Lingfield!

THE VIRGIN BET CHESTER STAKES (Listed Race)

Springing a minor upset, Allonsy (4/1) thwarted the leading market principals to run out a plucky winner of the feature race, leading from start to finish under Ed Greatrex to score by a length for trainer Ralph Beckett. Nudged into an early lead, Allonsy set a steady tempo at the head of affairs, holding sway ahead of Prydwen (9/1) for the most part. As the field remained well bunched, Allonsy quickened up the pace passing the four-furlong marker, maintaining a narrow lead as Tabletalk (9/4) made his bid around the outside. Ridden along more firmly but hanging tough under a strong drive, Allonsy was not for catching in the final quarter mile, clinging on bravely in the closing stages to provide Ed Greatrex with his biggest victory since returning to the saddle in 2024!

THE VIRGIN BET SUPPORTS SAFE GAMBLING HANDICAP STAKES

Notching a third course victory in the process, Yanifer (11/1) kept all challengers at bay from pillar to post when successful in Race 3, keeping on well to score by a length for Aiden Brookes and Harriet Bethell. A horse that likes to race handily, Yanifer broke very sharply from Stall 8 to take the early lead around the first turn, kicking on by a length ahead of fellow course winner Two Tempting (8/1) as Hawksbill (9/2) headed up the chasing pack. Niggled along under to maintain the lead, Yanifer looked to be travelling notably well around the home turn, many of his challengers now under pressure to close. Seizing the initiative, Yanifer kicked further clear entering the straight and despite the challengers closing in behind, ultimately proved too good. Enjoying her best season to date, Harriet Bethell has now racked up 16 winners in 2025, with a strike-rate of 20%!

THE BRITISH STALLIONS STUD EBF NOVICE STAKES

A most impressive winner, Lion Of Alba (10/11F) proved far too good for the opposition when taking the fourth race under Jason Hart, scooting clear down the straight to score by 5 lengths for trainer Hugo Palmer. Alert out of the gates, Lion Of Alba made an early bid to make all through the opening quarter mile, taking a lead of a couple of lengths ahead of Dryburgh (9/1) and Amirlan (8/1). Still in front passing the half mile point, Lion Of Alba moved sweetly under Jason Hart, rounding the final turn with ease as recent course winner Laazm (7/2) began to make headway to the leader’s outside. Swinging into the straight with the race at his mercy, Lion Of Alba really found top gear in the closing stages, showing a smart turn of foot at the furlong pole to provide Mrs Fitri Hay with her first winner on the Roodee since Democracy Dilemma’s victory in May 2024!

THE PETER & ANGELA WILSON ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP STAKES

Maintaining her consistent run of form, Kinswoman (5/4F) followed up her recent win at Windsor with an equally impressive victory in Race 5, keeping on nicely to score by 1 ¼ lengths for Cieren Fallon and William Haggas. Sitting prominently from an early stage, Kinswoman took the shortest route up in the inside rail through the halfway point, racing in the slipstream of I’m Next (10/1) as Our Planet (20/1) made a bid to the outer. Sneaking through to lead around the home turn, Kinswoman readily asserted with two furlongs to go, moving a length clear and staying on gamely all the way to the line to hold off a plucky I’m Next in second place. A jockey enjoying the season of his life, Fallon has ridden 89 winners in 2025, including a recent Group 3 victory at Windsor aboard Silawi!

THE HARRISON HANDICAP STAKES

One of the easiest winners of the day, Marchogian (18/5F) rewarded market support in no uncertain terms in the sixth race, ridden clear to score by 3 ¾ lengths at the finish for P J McDonald and Andrew Balding. Positioned well in Stall 1, Marchogian broke well to take a prominent spot behind Miraculous (5/1) in the early stages, the pair leading the way ahead of El Bodon (8/1) and Arabian Cobra (4/1). Travelling strongly and still yet to be asked a question, Marchogian really caught the eye heading for home, rounding the turn into the straight with ease as Miraculous came under pressure. Soon in the clear, Marchogian was not for catching in the final quarter mile, easily pulling clear of the remainder before crossing the line eased down at the finish. Now eleven-up for the season, Opulence Thoroughbreds also took a Group 2 last month with Royal Fixation!

THE POWELLS JEWELLERY HANDICAP STAKES

Bouncing back to form in determined style, It’s All About You (11/2) pulled out all the stops to see off the challengers in the finale, holding on by ½ a length to land the spoils for George Wood and Jennie Candlish. Leading the chasing vanguard, It’s All About You raced a couple of lengths behind as Gallant Lion (100/30) led the way through the first mile and a half, sitting pretty with half a mile left to run as the pace began to lift towards home. Moving up to challenge the leader as Percy Shelley (16/5) emerged on the scene, It’s All About You came under firm pressure with a couple of furlongs to go, pushed along to maintain the lead. However, despite briefly looking likely to be overhauled by Percy Shelley, the plucky 5-year-old pulled out more in the final furlong, clinging on grimly towards the line to provide George Wood with his 47th winner of the season!
