Polo returns to Chester Racecourse in 2026 – and it’s gearing up to be more thrilling than ever. This summer, the iconic Boodles Roodee Challenge Cup takes centre stage from Thursday 2nd July to Friday 3rd July, inviting spectators to experience heart-pounding Polo action at the world’s oldest racecourse.

Over the years, Polo has become a sparkling jewel in the Cheshire social calendar. Crowds gather for an unforgettable blend of sport, style and summer vibrancy, complete with fantastic entertainment and irresistible food and drink. Guests are welcomed on onto the Roodee to mingle, celebrate, and soak up an atmosphere you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Expect high drama and fierce competition as elite contenders battle for glory – and, of course, the coveted silverware presented in true style with a signature Laurent‑Perrier Champagne flourish.

Highlights

Divot Stomping

The longest-standing and most important of traditions in Polo. As the whistle blows at half time, guests take to the field to smooth out the divots from the horses’ hooves.

A silver cork is buried amongst the divots and the finder is presented with a bottle of Champagne or bespoke gift from the sponsor. And don’t worry, this takes places twice a day so you’ve got plenty of time to experience this unique tradition.

One Of The Oldest Team Sports

The sport of Polo dates back to 600 BC, making it one of the oldest team sports ever played!

The first recorded polo tournament was played when the Turkomans won against the Persians in a public match. It was the Persians and the Mogul conquerors of India who first spread the game of Polo across the Eastern world. From there, the sport has grown from strength to strength.
