Chester Racecourse has revealed the transformation of two of its County Boxes into contemporary new hospitality spaces, setting a new standard for premium raceday experiences. The newly reimagined Lily Agnes Suite and Watergate Suite blend elevated design with an informal dining concept, all set against the stunning panoramic backdrop of the world’s oldest operational racecourse.
The result of a creative collaboration between Chester Racecourse and leading interior design experts Layrd Design, the two suites have undergone a complete renovation to deliver relaxed, luxury hospitality for racegoers seeking something different.
The spaces boast bold, colour-drenched interiors, fully integrated with real greenery throughout, providing a sensory experience that’s both visually striking and environmentally conscious. By using only natural planting, the redesign supports Chester Racecourse’s wider mission to reduce environmental impact and embed sustainable practices into every detail of the race day experience.
Kate Dawson, Commercial Director, Chester Race Company said: “We’re incredibly proud to unveil the Lily Agnes and Watergate Suites – two beautifully reimagined hospitality spaces that reflect our ambition to deliver unforgettable raceday experiences. These suites offer a more relaxed and informal style of entertaining, with delicious bowl food, grazing plates, and sharing platters, all served by your own dedicated team. With elevated, panoramic views over the final furlong and finishing post, they provide a truly standout setting.
“A huge thank you goes to Layrd Design. It’s been a fantastic partnership, and their creativity has brought our vision for these spaces to life.”
Emily Batten, Head of Stadia at Layrd Design commented: “These spaces were designed to elevate the guest experience and enhance the energy of a race day. Each box was carefully tailored to offer its own distinctive identity, contributing to a sense of variety and exclusivity. The designs needed to honour the history of the racecourse while introducing a contemporary edge. Striking that balance was essential, ensuring these spaces are both modern but timeless.”
Hospitality in the Lily Agnes and Watergate Suites is centred on a social, informal dining experience, with menus offering bowl food, grazing plates, and sharing platters, all complemented by a private bar and dedicated waiting staff for the day.
Each suite has been thoughtfully named to honour Chester’s rich heritage. The Watergate Suite takes its name from the historic Watergate, the original gateway connecting the city centre to the racecourse and the River Dee. The Lily Agnes Suite pays tribute to the famous 19th-century racehorse Lily Agnes, who ran at Chester and went on to become the dam of the legendary Ormonde – one of only fifteen horses in history to win the English Triple Crown. QR codes in each suite allow guests to learn more about the stories behind the names and their connections to Chester’s racing legacy.
Layrd Design, renowned for their bold, character-driven work across stadia and commercial venues nationwide, brought their creative flair to the project – delivering standout spaces that honour tradition while embracing modern hospitality expectations.
