The winners of both the Weatherbys Cheshire Oaks and the Boodles Chester Vase have both followed on from their wins during the Boodles May Festival with success at Epsom in the Oaks and Derby.
In what has proven to be a dominant month for trainer Aidan O’Brien, the Ballydoyle maestro saddled Minnie Hauk to win the Cheshire Oaks on the opening day of the Boodles May Festival with Lambourn following up with success the next day in the Chester Vase. Both horses have taken the honours this weekend at Epsom in the Oaks and Derby respectively.
In addition, Lazy Griff, who was second today in The Derby, was beaten last time into second by Lambourn in the Chester Vase.
The last time the Chester Vase produced the winner of The Derby was in 2013, when Ruler Of The World completed the Chester/Epsom double. On the fillies’ side, Enable won the Cheshire Oaks on her way to victory in The Oaks in 2017.
Patrick Chesters, Racing Director at Chester Racecourse commented, “The results at Epsom over the last two days demonstrate the strength that the Epsom trials we host in early May have on the form for The Derby and The Oaks.
“For both the Oaks and the Derby victors to have won their races previously at Chester is a real accolade for Chester Racecourse and we are obviously delighted that the double success Minnie Hauk and Lambourn have had. Congratulations to Aidan O’Brien and connections.
“We continue to invest in our race programme, racecourse and facilities to ensure that Chester Racecourse can attract horses of the highest calibre and the Epsom results demonstrate this. We shall look forward to next year’s trials and hopefully, once again, being able to provide a strong trial ahead of victory at Epsom.”
