Roman Day

Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 11:30

Roman Day is the first of our family themed fixtures in 2020 and offers families the perfect opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the Half-Term holidays on Saturday 23 May.

On Roman Day, we’ll be celebrating our historical roots and location within the Roman city of Chester. Did you know, Chester Racecourse, established in 1539, is the oldest racecourse still in operation in the world. Why not read more about the history of the racecourse and view our special commemorative video, released in 2019 to celebrate 480 years of racing on the Roodee. Click here for more information.

In addition to the usual seven races, this day is the launch event for Chester’s annual Heritage Festival and racegoers can expect plenty of extra entertainment, including a parade from the city centre down to the racecourse, Roman foot soldiers roaming the course and fun, free activities for youngsters out on the Open Course.

Children aged 17 and under are eligible to attend this and every single race day at Chester free of charge with a full paying adult.

Take a look at the 2019 Roman Raceday Report and recall the battles out on the famous Roodee turf. Read more here.
